What Can You Do With A Psychology Degree? Quite A Lot!
The opportunities which have opened up for anyone with a psychology degree
is ‘amazing’– to put it in one word. Over and above the traditional
professions like teaching, clinic practice or research, there is plenty of what
you can do with a psychology degree in today’s job market. But how could
some who has done a degree in psychology make a candidate eligible for so many
varieties of jobs? How can you put your psychology degree to optimize your career
moves? What are the qualities and aptitudes that you could cultivate (if you
don’t have them already that is) which make you a wonder-kid in the professional
world?
To answer these questions there are some important things you should know. With
regard to the basic minimum requirement for nearly all jobs, a bachelor’s
degree with a special focus on psychology is comparable to a bachelor’s
degree with specialization in any subject. But then, focusing on psychology
is not just focusing on just another subject. Focused study in psychology makes
a better candidate in the job market. This is because for many jobs a psychology
degree can provide you with better preparation for the tasks that you will be
asked to do. Finally, you must remember that with a bachelor’s degree
in psychology, you can not be called a ‘psychologist’. For that
you either need to study more and earn a MA, PhD or PsyD. You could, however
be called a ‘counselor’ with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
These are some of the reasons why psychology students are preferred over other
graduates in a variety of jobs :
- You are a person considered to have better understanding of inter-personal
relationships; you work and interact with people better.
- You are supposed to be thoroughly trained in the areas of scientific research
and statistical programs. Thus, a student with a bachelor’s degree in
psychology has had more training in doing, analyzing, and writing up scientific
research papers than any other graduate of any other discipline. As a psychology
student you have the necessary research and writing skills.
It is also important that you follow your natural talent and strengths to improve
your chances of being a superior candidate. For example, if you feel most comfortable
working with children in a school environment, you will want to take courses
in developmental and child psychology or a special course to handle children
with exceptional/abnormal talents.
Both on campus and off campus, personal experiences often result in gaining
powerful advantages, more and better personal contacts. This way, you not only
create opportunities that allow others to get to know you but also contribute
to your personality growth and develop personal qualities as well: your positive
attitude, your responsibility, your willingness to work hard, etc.
